Throughout my labor I was restricted to my bed and suffered severe dehydration due to continuous vomitting. When Sebastian had finally arrived I held him for a few short moments before he was whisked away to be weighed and examined. I was so exhausted that I hadn't the strength to request 30 minutes to nurse. Once they had him bundled up that handed him to me, approx. 45 minutes after birth and I attempted to latch him but he was too asleep and I was too weak.
After 15 minutes of cuddling they whisked Sebastian away again for his first bath. He was returned to me after I was transfered to a different room about 3 hours later. Finally we had our first nursing session. During our 2 day hospital stay Sebastian refused the left breast. In the end all it took was for John, my fiance, to look at the situation from a different angle and latch him on for me. Since then - we've had a perfect latch.
About 3 weeks into our wonderful breastfeeding relationship, Sebastian and I both aquired thrush. Although his was cured within 7 days, I suffered major pain in my breasts and around my nipples for 4 additional months. Eventually we discovered that my body has a very big problem with yeast and that I had to stop using breastpads because of the milk build up and that after completely clearing my breasts of the thrush I have be very carefull about my cleansliness and also have to drink more cranberry juice.
Since the thrush has been gone Sebastian and I have been doing incredibly well with our breastfeeding relationship. Sebastian is a 100% mommas boy and absolutely loves the breast. I am very pleased with out success and plan to continue nursing Sebastian until he is atleast 18 months old. :)
